Self Assessment tax returns
Self Assessment is simple when your affairs are simple, and easy to get wrong when they aren’t. We prepare and file your return, check you are claiming the expenses and reliefs you are entitled to, and tell you exactly what to pay, including any payments on account.

Common questions
General guidance only. We’ll confirm what applies once we understand your circumstances.
When is the Self Assessment deadline?
Online returns and any tax owed are due by 31 January after the tax year ends. Paper returns are due by 31 October. If you need to register for the first time, tell HMRC by 5 October.
What are payments on account?
If your tax bill is above a certain level, HMRC asks you to pay towards next year’s bill in advance, in two instalments due on 31 January and 31 July. We calculate these and can apply to reduce them if your income is falling.
Does Making Tax Digital replace my tax return?
If you are within Making Tax Digital for Income Tax, quarterly updates and a final declaration replace the traditional return. See our Making Tax Digital page for who is affected and when.
